Part 1: Cedric Darrow, the hero of Vindication: Blood of the Archmage
The official synopsis calls him Ryan; on screen, in all forty episodes, he is Cedric Darrow, and nobody ever says the other name. He is a small boy in episode 1, cheering his father on and then throwing himself between Leon and the Royal Advisor, and a grown man in episode 2, telling his master that after fourteen years he has finally mastered the gold arcane arts and wants to leave the mountain for the Capital.
He is not the hero who hides his identity: he gives his real name at the registration desk in episode 4 and takes the crowd’s hatred in the face. His first act of power, in episodes 8 and 9, is not to destroy but to rebuild, restoring his father’s statue by elemental reformation while the arena laughs. His creed, repeated through the series, is his father’s: magic is for protecting the people you love, and a Darrow stands tall even when the whole world spits on his name.
The series tests that creed until it breaks. He spares House Mandra in episode 19, seals the necrotic circle to save a city that calls him a thief in episode 23, refuses a confession under torture in episode 32 and, in episode 39, agrees to give his life to the mob that demanded it, because everyone who loved him is gone. It is Elena who pulls him back, and the Cedric of episode 40 is a different man: an eye for an eye, the traitor cut down, and the Kingdom left behind for good.
Part 2: Leon Darrow and the Elf Queen in Vindication: Blood of the Archmage
The two people who raised Cedric: the father who died in the first episode and the master who took his place.
Leon Darrow, the Archmage
The Archmage who once terrified all six realms, called the King’s Right Hand, with power that rivaled a chancellor’s. In episode 1 he beats the monster in the square, tells his son that he is not brave all the time and was scared just now, scared of losing him, and then seems to lose his mind. The Royal Advisor declares him corrupted by demons and kills him; his last words to Cedric are "stand tall".
The truth comes out in episode 18, in the Elf Queen’s voice: fourteen years ago Leon sealed away a necromancer with nothing but his own life, saving a million souls in the Capital, and the Capital nailed his statue to the pillar of shame for it. In episode 28 Cedric names the monster: a Bone Dragon about to level the square. Leon appears in three flashbacks, in episodes 8, 9 and 11, always teaching: real magic is for protecting everything you hold dear.
Elena Valaena, the Elf Queen
For seventeen episodes she is "Granny", "master", "that old hag": a white-haired woman in rags who freezes time in episode 1 to carry Cedric out of the square, trains him on the mountain, follows him to the Capital in secret in episode 2 and walks onto the battlefield in episode 13 to tell the elven squad to kneel. The Elf Queen’s relic obeys her in episode 14 because, as she puts it, it is simply going home.
In episode 18 she shows her true self, six wings and the sacred mark: the Elf Queen of legend, the goddess who has protected the continent for a thousand years, immortal. She tells Cedric in episode 22 that between an immortal queen and her human student there is no future, and leaves for the Elven court. In episode 33 she feels that something has happened to him, tells the Elven court to go to hell, summons Aelaron, the ancient dragon god, as her mount, and in episode 36 arrives with the line that turns the series: "Touch my man, and you’re all dead!". Her name is only spoken in episode 39, when she gives up immortality and her crown to marry him.
Part 3: The villains of Vindication: Blood of the Archmage: the Royal Advisor, Paxton and the King
The conspiracy against House Darrow has three men in it, and by the end they share one body.
Lucas, the Royal Advisor
The man who steps forward in episode 1 to declare Archmage Leon corrupted by demons and strike him down himself, and who tells the boy in his way that he will build his name on both their corpses. For fourteen years the Capital believes Leon murdered him: the contestants in episode 7 smash the statue’s heart to avenge the Royal Advisor.
He is not dead. In episode 22 his spirit takes his son’s body, and in episode 37 Elena names what has been sitting on the throne: the Royal Advisor, Lucas, back from the dead, using the Capital’s greed and stupidity to destroy it. He is the necromancer of the story, the one who reawakens the circle Leon died sealing, curses the boy from Flea Street and tells Cedric that people are filthy and selfish by nature.
Paxton, the Royal Advisor’s son
In episode 4 the desk clerk greets him as the hero’s heir and waves him straight into the kingdom’s top hundred. He swears in episode 5 that Cedric will not walk out of the arena alive, because Cedric’s traitor father killed his, and in episode 7 tries to carve the head off Leon’s statue. In episode 22 he tells his father’s spirit he will pay any price to destroy House Darrow, and the price is his body.
The King
Never named. He approves the trial by combat in episode 9 and, in episode 20, restores the Darrow honor in public: a hundred thousand gold, the Black Rock territory, the Archmage’s title and his daughter’s hand. In episode 22 the thing wearing Paxton reminds him that the Royal Advisor plotted Leon’s death on his orders, because he feared the people loved the Archmage more than the crown. From episode 27 he is the one accusing Cedric of being the true necromancer; in episode 35 Cedric tells the crowd why: the man on the throne is not their king anymore.
Part 4: Euphemia, Frank and Tomas, and the houses of Vindication: Blood of the Archmage
The people who stand by Cedric, and the houses that stand in his way.
Princess Euphemia
The King’s daughter, who grew up with Cedric and thought he had died in that battle. In episode 5 she is the first person in the Capital to believe him and uses her authority to let him into the Warrior Trials. In episode 20 her father offers her hand as the third gift of the vindication; Cedric declines, and in episode 21 she saves them both the embarrassment: they have always just been good friends.
Uncle Frank and Uncle Tomas
The only two of House Darrow’s two thousand members to survive, tortured with bone-piercing nails, the cruelest punishment in the Kingdom, which strips magic and leaves the victim feeling ants gnawing at his bones every second. They spent fourteen years scrubbing Leon’s grave and guarding the Archmage’s staff, hand it to Cedric in episode 3, and die in episode 36 trying to free him when the necromancer orders them to kill him.
House Mandra, House Dixon, House Frost and House Gale
House Mandra are the elves who answer the Capital’s call in episode 12, hold the Elf Queen’s relic and lose their magic in episode 18 for twisting the truth; Cedric spares their lives and, from episode 21, they answer to him. House Dixon holds the Black Rock territory the King gives back to Cedric and never forgives it. The chief mages of House Frost and House Gale are the first match of the trial by combat, in episode 10, and the first to have their magic sealed.
