In Vindication: Blood of the Archmage, the Archmage Leon Darrow saves the Capital from a Bone Dragon and, minutes later, is declared corrupted by demons and cut down by the Royal Advisor in front of his own son. The mob calls him a traitor, his House of two thousand is tortured to death, and the boy is carried away by an old woman who freezes time to get him out. The official synopsis calls the hero Ryan; on screen, from the first scene, he is Cedric Darrow.
Fourteen years later Cedric comes down from the mountain with the gold arcane arts his father never mastered, walks into the Capital under his real name and enters the Warrior Trials, where the target of the year is his father’s statue nailed to the pillar of shame. Winning the trials is only the first half: the old woman who raised him turns out to be the Elf Queen of legend, the King who vindicates him is the one who ordered Leon’s death, and the necromancer Leon died sealing away has not finished with House Darrow.
Part 1: The story of Vindication: Blood of the Archmage, recapped
The series opens fourteen years in the past, on the day little Cedric cheers his father on against a monster in the Capital’s square. Leon wins, the crowd shouts "long live the Archmage", and then something goes wrong: the Archmage seems to lose his mind, and the Royal Advisor steps forward to declare that Leon has made a pact with demons and to strike him down himself. The boy throws himself in front of his father; the Advisor tells him that this works too, he will build his name on both their corpses. Leon dies with two words for his son, "stand tall". A white-haired old woman freezes time, calls Leon an idiot for sacrificing all his power for ungrateful fools, and takes the boy to raise him herself.
Fourteen years on the mountain end with Cedric mastering the gold arcane arts, a foundation his master says is already stronger than his father’s ever was. She sends him to the Capital to enter the Mage Trials and clear the Darrow name, pretends not to be sentimental about it, and follows him in secret. At Leon’s grave, two broken old men are still scrubbing the traitor’s headstone when a thug threatens to dig up the bones and feed them to the dogs. Cedric beats him and recognizes Uncle Frank and Uncle Tomas, the only two of House Darrow’s two thousand members to survive the torture, nailed with bone-piercing nails that strip magic and never stop hurting. They kept the Archmage’s staff. Over it, Cedric swears to win the Capital Trials and restore his House’s honor.
In the Capital, the Royal Advisor’s son, Paxton, walks straight into the kingdom’s top hundred without review, and Cedric, with no noble to recommend him, gives his name at the desk and hears the crowd demand he be nailed to a cross. Princess Euphemia, who grew up with him and thought him dead, uses her authority to let him into the Warrior Trials: if the Archmage betrayed the kingdom, that guilt is his alone, not his son’s. The trials open at Thousand Sail Harbor, in the Monument of the Ancients, where the year’s target is unveiled: a statue of Leon Darrow nailed to the pillar of shame, to be smashed by each contestant with his most violent magic.
One contestant blows out the statue’s heart, another cuts off its right arm, and Paxton is about to carve off its head when Cedric stops him and takes his turn. Told to smash his own father’s remains to prove his loyalty, he remembers what Leon taught him, that magic is for protecting the people you love and that a Darrow stands tall even if the whole world spits on his name, and his strike seems to do nothing. The crowd laughs until the rock starts moving: Cedric is rebuilding the statue with elemental reformation, a feat only an archmage can perform. The King approves a trial by combat instead, a death match against the kingdom’s finest mages; defeat them all and the Darrow name is cleared.
Cedric seals the magic of the chief mages of House Frost and House Gale in the first match, then holds off the whole corps, then the elven mage squad House Mandra sends against him, until an old woman in rags walks onto the battlefield and tells the elves to kneel. She takes the Elf Queen’s relic out of the Mandra heir’s hands, shrugs off mana siphons she mastered centuries ago, and when the holy knights and the elves close a ring of steel around them, decides fourteen years of hiding are enough. Six wings, the sacred mark: the master is the Elf Queen, the goddess of the legends, and she tells the Capital the truth. Leon sealed away a necromancer with his own life and saved a million souls, and the Capital repaid his son with every humiliation imaginable.
The Queen strips House Mandra of its magic; Cedric asks her to spare their lives, because they were deceived and the undead are coming. The King restores the Darrow honor in public, a hundred thousand gold, the Black Rock territory taken back from House Dixon, the title of Archmage and the hand of Princess Euphemia, which Cedric declines: his heart already belongs to someone else. That someone is his master. She refuses him, an immortal Elf Queen has no future with a human student, and leaves for the Elven court. In the same episode Paxton hands his body to the spirit of his dead father, and the thing wearing Paxton reminds the King of what they both know: fourteen years ago the Royal Advisor plotted Leon’s death on the King’s orders, out of fear that the people loved the Archmage more than the crown.
What follows is the second fall of House Darrow. Cedric detects a necrotic circle reawakening under the city and seals the vaults, estates and taverns above it; the merchants and House Dixon call it extortion, the mob calls him a thief, and a riot on Flea Street ends with Cedric pulling a boy out of it. At the inauguration, the King, now possessed himself, names Cedric the true necromancer, and the boy from Flea Street, marked with a curse, testifies that Cedric killed his father and raped his mother in front of him. Stripped of every honor and sentenced to death, Cedric is tortured for a confession he refuses to sign while the circle wakes up and the crowd, told his seals are the curse, tears every one of them down with its own hands.
The city starts losing its life force. The necromancer offers Cedric power for his soul and, when he refuses, forces Frank and Tomas to kill him or watch their families die; the two old men try to free him instead and die for it. Cedric, beaten, tells his father he still could not do it. Then a voice: touch my man and you are all dead. Elena, the Elf Queen, has defied the Elven court, summoned Aelaron, the ancient dragon god, as her mount, and come back. She exposes the thing on the throne as Lucas, the Royal Advisor, returned from the dead to use the Capital’s greed against it, and she settles every debt owed to House Darrow at once.
Even then the crowd asks Cedric to sacrifice his magic and his life to cleanse the city, the way his glorious father did. With his father, his uncles and his master all gone, he agrees. It is Elena who stops him, with her name, her crown and her immortality: she gives all three up and asks him to marry her. He says yes. In the last episode Cedric puts down the riot, cuts down the traitor behind it and tells the Capital that his family owes it nothing: he will never again bleed for people who do not deserve it, and what is left of his life he will spend building something of his own with the woman he loves. The mob begs him to take them along.
