World War III wiped everything out, and Wade Ryder survives by trading scrap for food while Jasper and Graham, his high school bullies, steal what he gathers. In an abandoned car he finds a skull ring on a skeleton’s finger: alien technology, which picks him as its host and starts handing out missions with a countdown. Failing means dying; delivering pays in food, water, medicine and weapons.

The first mission is an auction of two sisters, Margaret and Kate Grant, and Wade gives everything in his backpack to beat Jasper and Graham. The second is saving the actress Sally Quinn in five minutes, and the reward is an AK rifle with unlimited ammo. The four set up a house, with chicken soup, jealousy and an affection rate that only goes up.

The war part starts when the Wasteland gang kidnaps Margaret and Boone, its leader, takes Wade’s inventory in exchange for her and then denies the deal. From the first battle to the throne, the series ends with Wade as King of the Wasteland, four wives and armed guards.
