Cassia, the princess who was sold

Halgar’s daughter, raised far from any danger in a kingdom that has not called a dragon in a century. She is sold to the warlord as a political tool and arrives among the Blackclaw with an iron cuff on her wrist and the iron necklace at her throat.

What she wants changes over the series: first to survive; then not to be treated as merchandise; at the end, what is hers by right. The Proving makes her queen, Lothar’s punishment and the dragonfire melt the ice, the Drusilla scene makes her claim her husband, and the war against the Frostkin reveals her as the strongest dragon caller.

Ravek, the warlord

He commands the Blackclaw horde and the dragons the North lost. He pays for Cassia as he would pay for livestock, and his obsession begins the instant he sees her.

He is brutal with anyone who threatens her, punishes Lothar before the whole kingdom and walks through dragonfire to seal the binding. His mistake has a name: Drusilla, the lover he keeps even after all that. After the scene in episode 13 he is the one who teaches Cassia to call dragons and who crosses into Frostkin lands when Borin takes her.

King Halgar, the king of Skybound

Cassia’s father and king of a realm that has lost war after war since the dragons stopped answering. He chooses his people over his daughter and strikes the bargain that names the series.

Lothar, the ex-fiancé

He was Cassia’s fiancé before the bargain. He will not accept losing her to Ravek, attacks her after the binding and becomes, brutally punished before everyone, the warlord’s warning to the kingdom.

Drusilla, the lover

Daughter of Ravek’s general and his woman before Cassia arrived, seductive and scheming, she will not accept the Northern queen. She humiliates Cassia whenever she can and loses every contest; in the scene in episode 13 she gets a dragon sent at her and a slap.

Borin, the enemy of the end

He leads the Frostkin, the third clan, whose guardians are the Frost Dragons. He plans Cassia’s kidnapping with a diversion and finds out, in battle, that he kidnapped the strongest dragon caller.
