Part 1: Where to watch Altarboy

Part 2: The story of Altarboy

Theo Martin comes out at eighteen and his father, Matthew Martin, a member of the parish council, dumps him at Sacred Heart to be “cured”. Attacked in an alley on his way out of town, Theo is saved by Father Alexander, the new head priest, who then makes him his personal altar boy because his own future depends on Matthew Martin’s recommendation.

The two clash from the start. Then Theo, convinced the priest is gay after overhearing a nun in the confessional, confesses his attraction to Alexander in graphic detail, is punished for it, and overhears the priest confessing desires of his own. What was hostility becomes a game, and the game becomes a kiss.

In the end, Father Alexander declares his feelings in church, in front of Theo’s father, and leaves the priesthood. Theo breaks with the father who rejected him, and the two get their happy ending.

Theo Martin

The eighteen-year-old at the center of it, played by Declan Clifford. Openly gay in a town that punishes it, he arrives at the church as a sentence and turns the confessional into his weapon.

Father Alexander

Sacred Heart’s new head priest, played by Cayman Cardiff. Cold and commanding with Theo because the boy’s father holds his future, and less certain of himself than he lets on.

Matthew Martin

Theo’s father, played by Michael Heymann. He rejects his son, hands him to the church and holds the recommendation the priest needs.
