Altarboy recap: from the alley to the confession in front of the whole church
Altarboy follows Theo Martin, eighteen and disowned for being gay, from the alley where Father Alexander saves him to the church where the priest gives up his collar for him. Part 1: The story of Altarboy, in order
It starts with a car door and a rejection. Theo Martin, barely eighteen, has come out, and his father, Matthew Martin, answers by leaving him at Sacred Heart, the Catholic church of a small, repressive town, with orders that he be fixed. Theo’s first instinct is to get out. Before he can, he is attacked in an alley, in the rain.
The man who saves him is the last person he expects: Father Alexander, the new head priest, young enough and handsome enough that Theo wonders how he ended up with a collar. Gratitude lasts about a scene. Alexander needs Matthew Martin’s recommendation to secure his position, so he makes Theo his personal altar boy and demands respect for the house of God. Theo answers with insolence.
The confessional changes the temperature. Theo overhears a nun’s confession and comes away certain that the priest is gay. When his own turn comes, forced to confess, he says exactly what he feels about Father Alexander, and then keeps going, describing what he would want the priest to do to him at the altar. Alexander calls it mockery and punishes him. The punishment ends with Theo at the priest’s door, listening to Alexander confess needs of his own.
From there it is a game of provocation. Theo accuses the priest of repressing what he wants and pretending to be above everyone else; Alexander rejects him, then cannot stay away; Theo keeps pushing, with seduction and dares, until they kiss. The town, the parish council and Theo’s father are all watching.
The ending is a confession of a different kind. Father Alexander declares his feelings for Theo inside the church, in front of Theo’s father, and gives up the priesthood to do it. Theo, for his part, stops waiting for a father who will never accept him. They leave their old lives behind and get their happy ending together.

Theo Martin
Eighteen, gay, thrown out of his home and into a church. He is the one who says what everyone else hides, first in the confessional and then to the priest’s face. Played by Declan Clifford.
Father Alexander
The new head priest of Sacred Heart, harsh with Theo because his future depends on Theo’s father. He is the one with the most to lose, and the one who ends up choosing to lose it. Played by Cayman Cardiff.
Matthew Martin
Theo’s father, on the parish council. He dumps his son at the church and holds the recommendation the priest needs. Played by Michael Heymann.
