Part 2: The story of Altarboy in 63 episodes
The first nine episodes are the setup, and they are dense. Theo Martin is dumped at Sacred Heart by his father for being gay, attacked in an alley and saved by Father Alexander, the new head priest, who makes him his altar boy to earn Theo’s father’s recommendation. By episode 5 Theo has overheard a nun’s confession and decided the priest is gay; by episode 7 he has confessed, in detail, what he wants from him; by episode 8 he has overheard the priest confess the same; by episode 9 he has said so to his face.
The middle stretch is the game: rejection, seduction, dares, a kiss, and a town, a parish council and a father closing in on both of them.
The end is a declaration. Father Alexander tells the church, and Theo’s father, what he feels for Theo, and leaves the priesthood. Theo leaves his father. The last episode, the longest of the 63, sends them off together.
