Altarboy characters: Theo Martin and Father Alexander, from enemies to lovers
Altarboy follows Theo Martin, an eighteen-year-old dumped at Sacred Heart church by his father to be “cured” of being gay, and Father Alexander, the young head priest who makes him his personal altar boy. Cayman Cardiff plays the priest and Declan Clifford plays Theo. Sixty-three episodes, in English, all free.
Altarboy is a forbidden romance inside a small-town Catholic church: an eighteen-year-old sent there to be “cured” and the young priest who is supposed to do the curing. Here is who they are, what drives them and where the story turns. Episode 1 is right below.
Part 1: The story of Altarboy
Theo Martin is eighteen and has just come out. His father, Matthew Martin, a man with a seat on the parish council, disowns him and drops him at Sacred Heart, the town’s Catholic church, to be “cured”. Looking for a way out of the repressive town, Theo is attacked in an alley.
The man who pulls him out of it is Father Alexander, Sacred Heart’s new head priest: young, handsome and, as Theo soon finds out, harsh. Alexander’s future at the parish depends on a recommendation from Theo’s father, so he makes the boy his personal altar boy. Neither of them likes the arrangement.
Then comes the confessional. After overhearing a nun’s confession, Theo becomes convinced the priest is gay, and when his own turn comes he confesses, in detail, what he feels for Father Alexander. Alexander punishes him for mocking the house of God. Later, Theo ends up at the priest’s room and overhears Alexander confessing desires of his own.
What follows is a game of provocation: Theo calls the priest out for repressing what he wants and pretending to be better than everyone else; Alexander pushes him away and pulls him back. The attraction becomes mutual, then impossible to hide. In the end, Alexander declares his feelings for Theo in church, in front of Theo’s father, and gives up the priesthood. Theo cuts ties with the father who would never accept him, and the two get their happy ending together.
Part 2: Main characters in Altarboy
Three people carry the story: the boy, the priest and the father who set it all in motion.
Theo Martin (Declan Clifford)
The protagonist. Eighteen, openly gay and thrown out of his home for it, he arrives at Sacred Heart as a punishment and refuses to shrink. He is stubborn, quick with a comeback and honest about what he wants, even inside a confessional.
What he wants at first is a way out of the town. What he finds is a priest who provokes him, and he answers provocation with provocation. By the end he no longer needs his father’s approval, and he says so.
Father Alexander (Cayman Cardiff)
The love interest. The new head priest of Sacred Heart, too young and too good-looking for the collar, cold and commanding with Theo from the first day. He needs Matthew Martin’s recommendation to keep his position, and that is the reason he takes the boy on as his altar boy.
His duty is to “cure” Theo. His problem is that Theo is right about him. Between the punishment he hands out and the desires he confesses when he thinks no one is listening, Alexander is the one with the most to lose, and in the end he is the one who chooses to lose it, in public.
Matthew Martin (Michael Heymann)
Theo’s father, and the reason the story exists. He sits on the parish council, rejects his son the moment he comes out and hands him to the church to be fixed. He holds the recommendation Father Alexander needs, which makes him the power both men have to answer to. He is also the man in front of whom Alexander finally tells the truth.
