Altarboy ending explained: why Father Alexander gives up the priesthood
Altarboy ends with Father Alexander choosing Theo over the priesthood. He declares his feelings in church, in front of Theo’s father and the congregation, and walks away from the collar; Theo cuts ties with the father who dumped him there. The two get their happy ending. All 63 episodes are free.
Altarboy builds its ending from the first confession: everything Theo says inside the booth, and everything the priest says when he thinks no one is listening, comes back in the last scenes. Read Altarboy full movie to get there in order.
Part 1: The ending of Altarboy, explained
The ending answers the question the series asks in episode 9: is the priest attracted to the boy? Father Alexander spends most of the story saying no, to Theo and to himself. He punishes Theo for confessing his desire, rejects him when the desire is returned, and keeps the collar between them. The last act removes the collar.
Alexander’s declaration happens in church, in front of Theo’s father, Matthew Martin, the man whose recommendation the priest needed to keep his position. That is the point of the scene: the one person Alexander had every reason to please is the one he tells the truth to. By saying it there, he gives up the priesthood and the future he was protecting when he took Theo on as his altar boy.
Theo’s ending mirrors it. He came to Sacred Heart hoping, somewhere, for a way back to a father who had thrown him out. The series lets him stop hoping: he cuts ties with Matthew Martin, who was never going to accept him, and chooses the man who accepted him in front of everyone. Both reject the lives they were assigned, and they leave together.
Why it is a happy ending, and not a tragic one: because the series is on Theo’s side from the first episode. The town is repressive, the church is used as a punishment, and the two people inside it who tell the truth are the ones who win. Alexander finds acceptance somewhere else; Theo finds it in him.
Part 2: Characters who decide the ending of Altarboy
Three people, three choices.
Father Alexander
He chooses to say it out loud, in the one place and in front of the one man where it costs the most. Cayman Cardiff plays the priest who stops repressing what Theo accused him of repressing in episode 9.
Theo Martin
He chooses to stop waiting for his father. Declan Clifford plays the boy who spent the series provoking the priest into honesty and, at the end, is honest about his own family.
Matthew Martin
He chooses nothing, which is the point. Michael Heymann plays the father who dumped his son at the church and, at the end, is the audience for the confession he never wanted to hear.
Part 3: Episodes that set up the ending of Altarboy
Three episodes plant what the finale pays off, plus the finale itself.
Episode 6
In episode 6, Theo confesses his attraction to Father Alexander. Everything the priest later has to admit starts as something Theo said first.
Episode 8
In episode 8, after punishing Theo for mocking the house of God, Alexander confesses his own feral needs, and Theo overhears him. From here on the priest cannot claim he feels nothing.
Episode 9
In episode 9, Theo calls the priest out for repressing his desires and pretending to be better than everyone else. The ending is Alexander agreeing with him, in public.
Episode 63
Episode 63 closes the story. By the time it ends, Alexander has declared himself in church in front of Theo’s father and left the priesthood, Theo has broken with his father, and the two are together. It is also the longest episode of the series.
Part 4: Where to watch Altarboy
All 63 episodes are on the series page, in English and in order. Every one of them is free, and the ending is in episode 63.
