Part 1: The story of Altarboy Bilibili

In Altarboy Bilibili, the church is the punishment. Theo Martin comes out at eighteen and his father, a parish council member named Matthew Martin, leaves him at Sacred Heart with instructions to be fixed. Theo would rather leave the town; before he can, he is attacked in an alley, and Father Alexander, the new head priest, is the one who gets him out.

The priest is young and handsome, and the series does not pretend Theo fails to notice. It also does not pretend Alexander is kind: his future depends on Theo’s father, so he makes the boy his personal altar boy and demands respect for the house of God. The tension between them is there from episode 3.

The confessional does the rest. Theo overhears a nun’s confession, decides the priest is gay, and, forced to confess himself, tells Alexander what he feels and what he wants from him at the altar. He is punished for mockery. Then he overhears the priest confessing the same needs to an empty room, and in episode 9 he says so to his face.

The rejection that follows does not last: seduction, games, a kiss, and finally a declaration in church, in front of Theo’s father, that costs Alexander the priesthood. Theo cuts ties with his father. The two leave together.
