Eleanor Vance is a high school star student whose closest bond is with Leo Carter, her best friend for sixteen years. Their long friendship changes when Leo knocks her out and ties her to a goalpost as a prank meant to impress Savannah. The humiliation unfolds in front of the whole school, leaving Eleanor to transfer to California without saying goodbye. There, Ellie finds genuine friendship, academic success, and a caring new boyfriend, building a life separate from the school and the betrayal that drove her away. Leo is consumed by regret, but his remorse cannot easily undo what happened. As Ellie moves forward, she faces the painful question of whether a betrayal that shattered trust can ever be forgiven.
