The will is read, and Christine Parrish learns she's marrying a stranger. She agrees because her grandfather asked, but makes it clear from day one that the marriage is paper only. To everyone else, Elijah is her assistant. He doesn't argue. He does what he's always done: fixes problems without saying how.
When Mr. Hiller falls ill, Elijah quietly heals him. In return, the Hiller family signs the contract Christine's company needed. Christine never learns who closed the deal. Elijah could change her life with a snap of his fingers and chooses to let her underestimate him.
Four days remain until her 30th birthday and the end of the arrangement. Elijah prepares a necklace. That's when Tony Roth, Christine's ex, reappears and humiliates the "assistant husband" in front of her. She doesn't defend him. By episode 5, Elijah is almost done with the deal, and Christine still doesn't know who she married. No spoilers for the ending.
