Part 1: The story of Never Underestimate Girl Math
The organizers go looking for the genius at an Ivy League school. They find a farm girl. Zosha runs home to tell her mom, Margaret Harmon, who has been mending her shoes. Margaret isn't her birth mother. Years ago she found an orphan who had pulled a math textbook out of the trash and recited "sine, cosine" like a prayer. She taught her everything she knew.
What she knew was worth a lot. Margaret was once a respected name in Silicon Valley, until she presented a new microchip model at a conference. Becky Caine, her protégé and the youngest math professor at Princeton, took the stage and called fraud. She had a thesis certified by five journals, the patent, and a director of science and technology swearing she'd submitted it three days earlier. Security walked Margaret out. Becky kept the legacy and, later, a Nobel Prize.
Now Zosha is leading the national round, and Becky spots her advisor's name on the form. If the girl really is a genius, people will start asking about the past. Becky calls the press: Zosha cheated. By episode 5, Margaret's story is on the table, and the woman who ruined her is about to judge her daughter. No spoilers for the ending.
